Infrared light isn’t one-size-fits-all
There are three types of infrared light; near, mid, and far, and the body absorbs each one at different levels.
- Near infrared (NIR) is absorbed at a cellular level, making it ideal for boosting mitochondria and increasing collagen production. NIR will also deliver the lowest heat level, warming the body rather than causing the type of heat that leads to perspiration.
- Mid infrared (MIR) acts a lot like FIR, and helps with heart health, circulation, pain relief and muscle recovery.
- Far infrared (FIR) penetrates deeper into the body because it’s soaked up by water molecules in the body. This helps improve health at a cellular level because the light can reach muscles and tissues. As such, FIR will raise core body temperature and stimulate sweat glands because it creates more heat.
Infrared saunas have become popular for their potential health benefits, including boosting the immune system.
Here are some ways infrared saunas may enhance immunity:
Detoxification**: Infrared saunas induce deep sweating, which helps eliminate toxins and heavy metals from the body. This detoxification process can enhance immune function by reducing the body’s toxic burden.
Improved Circulation
The heat from infrared saunas promotes increased blood circulation. Better blood flow ensures that immune cells can move more efficiently throughout the body, enhancing their ability to detect and fight infections.
Enhanced White Blood Cell Production
Regular use of an infrared sauna can stimulate the production of white blood cells, which are crucial for the immune system. An increase in white blood cells improves the body’s ability to fight off infections and diseases.
Stress Reduction
Chronic stress can weaken the immune system. Infrared saunas promote relaxation and help reduce stress levels by lowering cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. A less stressed body can maintain a stronger immune response.
Improved Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a robust immune system. The relaxing effects of infrared saunas can improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, leading to better overall health and immune function.
Reduction of Inflammation
Infrared heat can help reduce inflammation by penetrating deep into muscles and joints. Reducing chronic inflammation can alleviate stress on the immune system, allowing it to function more effectively.
Enhanced Cellular Repair and Regeneration
Infrared saunas can promote cellular repair and regeneration by increasing mitochondrial activity. Healthier cells contribute to a more efficient and resilient immune system.
Increased Core Body Temperature
Infrared saunas raise the core body temperature, mimicking a fever. Fevers are the body’s natural response to infection, helping to enhance the immune response and inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses.
Improved Lymphatic Function
The heat from infrared saunas can stimulate the lymphatic system, which is crucial for immune function. Enhanced lymphatic drainage helps remove toxins and waste products from the body, supporting a healthy immune system.
While infrared saunas offer these potential benefits, it’s important to use them safely and consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have any underlying health conditions. Staying hydrated and listening to your body’s signals during sauna sessions is also crucial to avoid overheating or dehydration.
